QA Softball is dedicated to providing a fun experience for the girls, and giving them the opportunity to participate in organized team competition, while being taught the principles of good sportsmanship, and the fundamentals of softball at all levels.

ALL DIVISIONS ARE CATEGORIZED BY GRADES.  PLAYERS CAN "PLAY UP" A DIVISION IF THEY CHOOSE.  HOWEVER, PLAYERS WANTING TO "PLAY DOWN" A DIVISION BECAUSE OF EXPERIENCE/SKILL, WOULD NEED TO REQUEST THIS, AND HAVE IT APPROVED BY QA SOFTBALL.

"T-Ball" (grades PK-K)

Tee-ball is introduced to players at this age.  Games are 90-minutes at most, and players are introduced to softball using a "soft" ball.  QA Softball all-girls teams would participate in the UQA Little League program, playing against teams in that program.  Games are played at various locations in Centreville.

"ROOKIE" (1st & 2nd grades) - coach-pitch; very low-key and a lot of fun!

"Rookie" Rules:

  1. Coaches act as umpires.

  2. “Home” team will provide 2+ game balls.

  3. Coaches will provide 5 pitches to each batter. If a batter continues to foul off pitches they continue to bat.  After 5 pitches they will hit from the batting tee. If a batter is really struggling to hit the ball, you can try soft toss.

  4. Each half inning ends on either 3 outs or 6 batters.

  5. All players are in the batting order and play defensively every inning.

  6. Players will play normal infield positions no matter who is batting.

  7. Extra players are to be used in the outfield.  Catcher's position is optional.

  8. Sliding is optional, if they are taught to slide properly.

  9. Games last for 90 minutes or less.

  10. There is no stealing or advancing on passed balls or overthrows.  Runners stay on base until the ball is hit (you might want a coach or parent near the backstop to retrieve passed balls so the game will move quicker).

  11. Player will field the pitcher’s position even though it is coach pitch.

  12. No dropped third strike or infield-fly rule.

"MINOR" (3rd & 4th grades) - combination player-pitch / coach-pitch (see below); a little more competitive as teams keep score and there is a play-off at the end of the season

"Minor" Rules (35' pitching distance):

G

Games are played by the book with the following league revisions:

  1. Coaches will act as umpires if a paid umpire is not available.  Please make sure to discuss and agree on a strike zone with the opposing coach - then just do your best.  Umpires are to be positioned behind home plate each game.  If a coach is umpiring, they should be positioned in the area behind home plate to umpire.

  2. “Home” team will provide 2+ game balls.

  3. Kid-pitch until the batter gets 4 balls (no walks).  The coach whose team is batting would then pitch to the batter.  The strike count remains, and the batter either hits or strikes out.  Pitcher must stay within circle while coach is pitching.  Coach must be on the rubber when pitching.

  4. An OVERTHROW refers to a play ON THE RUNNER ONLY.  Runners can advance at own risk on overthrows, but 1 base only – it is still a LIVE ball so fielders can try to get runner out if they choose.  If the fielders are NOT making a play on the runner, the runner cannot advance more than one base on the play (ex: groundball to infield results in overthrow to 1st, runner can advance to 2nd; if fielder throws ball back into infield/pitcher - NOT playing on the runner - and overthrows fielder = NO advancement; but if player throws to 2nd in an attempt to get runner and overthrows 2nd, runner can advance to 3rd). The “one-base” applies to other runners on base as well.  Overthrow from catcher to pitcher = no advancing (because not making a play on the runner).

  5. Runners can leave the base once the pitcher releases the ball.

  6. No base stealing.  Runners can advance to next base (except home) only if a ball goes past the catcher to the backstop (2nd half of season / beginning May 6), and not on a coached-pitch. You might want a coach or parent from the fielding team only, near the backstop to retrieve passed balls when no one is on base, so the game will move quicker.

  7. Dropped third strike is NOT used. Infield fly rule IS used.

  8. Games have a 1 hour, 45-minute time limit (if Kent Co vs Kent Co, it will be 2 hours).  No new inning starts after time expires or it is too dark.  Umpire will be official time keeper.

  9. There is a 5-run limit per inning.

  10. 10 players in the field on defense – 10th player must play in the outfield.  Outfielders must play in the outfield grass (no 5 infielders).

  11. On offense, a team can bat 10, 11 with an EH, 12 with 2-EH, or the entire roster.  If batting entire roster, it is free defensive substitutions.  Otherwise, substitutions are “by the book” with the EH considered a “position.” The DP/Flex will not be used.

  12. You must have 8 players to play, else it is a forfeit. A team can begin the game with 8 players without penalty of an out in the line-up.  However, if that team loses a player during the game, the game is over = “forfeit.”

  13. If a team loses a player during the game and does not have a legal substitution, that position in the batting line-up will then become an “out.”

  14. If a pitcher hits any opposing batter 3 times, they are to be replaced by a new pitcher.  This pertains to one player hit 3 times, or three opposing players hit one time each.

  15. If any coach is ejected from a game, they must sit out the following game as well.

Players must play in at least 9 games to be eligible for the playoffs.
